Mission and Staff

Our Mission

The Academic Support Center (ASC) supports the college's mission by providing academic assistance and enrichment for all Southwest students through the use of technology, tutoring, and other educational resources.

The ASC provides services and resources to help Southwest Tennessee Community College students successfully reach their academic and career goals. These include tutoring, open computer labs, ancillary course materials (video tapes, textbooks, etc.), and study areas. Currently the Academic Support Center has locations at the Union, Southeast, Gill, Macon, and Whitehaven campuses.

Professional Tutoring Staff

The tutors at the ASC are committed to helping all Southwest students become independent learners and achieve their academic goals. Many of the tutors have earned either a Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree. Some of the tutors have teaching experience. Others have full-time jobs in business and industry. The Academic Support Center is certified through CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association).

The ASC staff tutor in a variety of content areas including Mathematics, English, Information Technology, Engineering Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Spanish, and Accounting. ASC locations vary on the availability of tutoring in some of these content areas. For additional information on tutoring for specific courses, contact individual ASC locations.

Study Areas

Many students use the ASC as a place to study individually or in groups. Resources such as the Internet or ASC tutors are available when or if needed.
